"I unfolded myself from the cramped cairn tunnel and stepped outside only to be blinded by light.Shielding my eyes, I squinted through split fingers at a world I hardly recognized." Here is a bit of foreshadowing when Jacob says 'a world I hardly recognized' because it's true. Once he's through the tunnel he's in a totally different world. He doesn't quite yet realize that he's gone back in town but he is starting to notice something is different. For starters it's a nice, sunny day which is odd since it's usually cold and dreary. Then when he walks through town everybody stares at him like he's crazy and now Jacob is thinking what is going on?
"My name is Headmistress Peregrine, or if you prefer since you are not currently under my care, Miss Peregrine. Pleased to finally meet you." This is the moment Jacob has been waiting for, to finally meet Miss Peregrine and get some answers. He now knows somehow he's landed in the past. Jacob meets with a girl, Emma whom he saw on the other side of the tunnel. She leads him back to the orphanage and in the yard he sees all the kids from the photos. Now he's certain his grandfather told him the truth. When he meets the Headmistress she is nothing but kind and trusting towards him. The other children are a little uncertain of him and don't believe him about who his grandfather is. So finally Miss Peregrine sits him down to have a talk about what's happening.

"I'd still like to know how someone manages to get a sunburn on a day like this." This is what Jacobs dad says to him after he's spent a day in the past with the peculiar children. He is beginning to get a little suspicious of Jacob. Like why he has a sunburn and where he spend his days.
"I lay there in the dark, still looking." Jacob is talking about Emma and he is realizing that he has feelings for her. Everything he does he thinks about Emma. But he also knows that it's wrong because she loves his grandfather and he's only a replacement.
