Job #6 Mood Maven. Bella.Pepper

                                                               The mood!!

Passage 1 pg.102

The overall mood of Jacob is confused, disappointed, unfaithful. This is know because the author is

trying to have everyone second guess Grandpa Portman and the choices he made when he was

younger. He also wants Jacob to sound and look weak.

But in Passage 2 pg.123

The over all mood of the setting is suspicious and mysterious. This is know because the author is

making a more dramatic seen with the kids since its their first time seeing him and him seeing them.

Now in passage 3 pg.151

The overall mood of Miss Peregrine is frustrated and self absorbed . This is know because the author is making her

sound self-absorbed because "I warned him not to leave." she also said this while making a fist with

her hands.

But in passage 4 pg.171

The overall mood of setting is engaging and mysterious. This is know because the author is

pulling towards  an object but makes it more of a long story then a short story because he plays with

the object and describes it but keeps in to the side tell the end.

Now in passage 5 pg.204

The overall mood of the action is disturbing and powerful. This is know because the author is

describing a blood bath and compering it to art and zippers.

Their is meany moods in this wonderful, mysterious novel.

Character Commandant - Vivian section 4

Page 336
Jacob and the other kids were planning on what to do next. Since Miss Peregrine can not turn back into her human form. " I asked Emma how were going to navigate. After all, none of the children had been off the island in nearly eighty years, and Miss Peregrine couldn't speak or fly." Jacob is trying to take charge of the situation.

Page 336
Jacob and Emma went to go look for the map in the house. While looking for the map Jacob and Emma found some things that could help Millard. "On our way out, we found alcohol and Laudanum and proper bandages for Millard. Once we'd helped clean and dress his wound, we sat down to examine the book. Here Jacob is thinking about others.

Page 337
Is it true? Yes it is. Jacob has decided to stay with Miss Peregrines and the children. There might not be a way for him to go back so is he sure he wants to stay? "Well then," I said, "it's a good thing i'm coming with you." Emma spun to look at me. "Oh, that's wonderful!" she cried, and hugged me. "Are you certain?" I told her I was." In here Jacob is being certain. He knows whats best for him and the children.

Page 339
Its time to say goodbye? Jacob went back to tell his dad the truth but he wasn't there. So Jacob sat down with a pen and paper explaining everything but it was no good. Just when Jacob was throwing away the letter his father came in.  His dad was furious that Jacob had lied to him. He wanted to go home and he told Jacob to pack his bag. Jacob is very nervous in this situation because he's not sure how his dad is going to react.

Page 342
Emma, Olive and Millard all showed up to help Jacob. His father believe that the whole thing was a dream and went back to bed. Jacob felt bad to leave his dad like that. A letter with no proof what so ever. Luckily Emma had proof. A picture of her and Abe. She also wrote a letter to Jacobs father. When she was done Jacob was ready to live his parents. "When she finished writing, she gave it to me. I looked at both sides and then fished my letter from the trash, smoothed it, and left it on the table with the photo.
" Ready to go?" I said
My friends were standing in the doorway, waiting for me.
"Only if you are," Emma replied.

Page. 206
"Yours is a world they can never be part of, Mr. Portman. So what's the use in filling their heads with grand talk about the exotic wonders of the future?"

I picked this quote because it shows that Miss Peregrines really cares about the kids and their safety. It also show that Miss Peregrine thinks that both worlds are so different that its unless to fill their heads with dreams and wonders.

Page. 219
"You mean you actually raid the village." "Smash it up, chase people around, take what we like, burn things down. Its all a good laugh.... Well they're back right as rain the next day and don't remember nothing about it."

This quote talks about what some of the peculiar children do for fun. Some kids think that it doesn't matter what they do because the next day will just restart and no one will remember.

Page. 240/241
"Emma shook her head." "Is that really what you think?" "If I could do something spectacular like you, don't you think I would've noticed by now?" " I'm not meant to tell you this," she said, "but common people can't pass through time loops."

I've been wonder all this time if Jacob was peculiar or not. I guess he is! I chose this quote because in the beginning of the book Jacob thought of himself as a normal kid. Little did he know he was just like the other peculiar children and his grandfather.

Page. 241
"Abe had a rare and peculiar talent, something almost no one else could do." "And then she met my eyes and said, "He could see the monsters."

From the beginning of the book we didn't know much about Abe, Jacobs grandfather until now. We now know that he was peculiar. He has the powers to see monsters. Maybe thats why he was killed. Like Emma said in the quote above Abe had a rare talent almost no one could do.

PAGE 352, The day was warm, but a cool breeze came of the
   water.

made me think no matter how your day want
the weather is sunny warm well there is a   new breeze makes you smile and appreciate   what you have.

PAGE 352, We’d brought none of the old photo albums
with us; maybe this would be the first picture in a
   brand new one.

When I finished reading this quote I thought of how
good it is to start a new page in there life. Beginning
with a new page in there life yet still remembering
the memories they had on the island.

PAGE 351, Through the smoking charred woods and the
flat bog dug with bomb holes.

I picked this quote because it gives you
more understanding of the setting which
is a small island. And by the way they
described the island its seems like
a dark unsafe place you would not want to
be.

PAGE 352, And yet my old life was as impossible to
return to as the children’s bombed house.

I choose this one because it made me see
that no matter what Jacob will do nothing
will be the same as when his grandfather
was alive no matter how hard he tries.

PAGE 352, I realized that leaving wouldn't be like I had
imagined,like  casting off a weight.

Jacob thought that leaving would be hard but once it come to it
and he had to leave it was easier than he thought it would be. I
picked because I can relate to it because I always think it will
be hard but it not.

"She can do what she likes," said Bronwyn. "She's the bird."
I chose this quote because I feel like it emphasizes Miss Peregrines importance and power. They all respect and realize her position as their protector. She's kind of like a mother to them because they all get sort of annoyed with her but they still love Miss Peregrine.

Page 294
"How many other roles in my life had this chameleon played?"
Jacob, Emma, Bronwyn and Enoch all go outside of the loop to go to try to talk to a man who they believe was attacked by a hollowgast. While there out the loop they meet a wight who has posed as many people in Jacobs life. He was Jacobs bus driver, therapist and was there the day Grandpa Portman. Jacob told his therapist everything about the island so he knew exactly where to find them. So the wight follows Jacob to the island to come after the peculiars and Miss Peregrine.

Page 309
"He stuffed this in my pocket before he left. Said if we tried to come after him, this is what would happen."
The wight, Jacob's therapist gave them a picture of a dead bird next to a gun to try and scare them. He was trying to send the message that if they came after him he would kill Miss Peregrine. So now everybody is scared to go after them but they know they need to save Miss Peregrine.

Page 321
"If it means I get to melt that wights face off," she said, little arcs of flames pulsing between her hands, "then absolutely."
Here Emma and Jacob are talking about going after the wight. Their both angry and can't wait to get back Miss Peregrine from the wight. This quote starts the build up for the big ending.

Page 352
"We rowed faster."
This is the last sentence of the book talking about how all the kids are getting in boats to try to find another loop. They were getting ready to row away and then in the distance they see big battleships so they began to row away faster.

Page 210
"Forgive me. I continue to underestimate the breadth of your ignorance." Miss Peregrine says to Jacob. She sounds very condescending and makes Jacob feel nervous. When she says 'forgive me' she's being sarcastic and trying to make Jacob realize he's in the wrong.

Page 218
"Whatever," I said "You brought it up." Jacob is mood here is frustrated. He feels this way because the other kids all know stuff he doesn't. They all discuss other secrets and when Jacob tries to ask they say they can't tell him. Now Jacob is starting to get annoyed. The feeling these words create is sort of bitter.

Page 221

"Would you wake him? Oh please Enoch." This quote is from one of the children on the island, Bronwyn. She's asking the other boy Enoch if he'll wake up her brother. Her tone is very forlorn. It makes you feel sorry for her, that she lost her brother.

Page 232

"I'm really, really sorry," I repeated. "I never do things like this." Jacob is very regretful after he gets caught. He goes into Emma's room and finds letter between her and Jacob's grandfather. His curiosity gets the better of him and so he goes through the letters. She catches him and gets very angry so he feels remorse. It makes you feel Jacob's guilt and Emma's anger.

Page 247

"I'd always known I was strange." Jacob says once he realizes that he too is peculiar. He's not really upset or anything he's just kind of calm about it. I think he's sort of glad he has more of an excuse to stay with the peculiars and not return to his average, boring life.

In section 4 when Jacob makes the decision to stay at Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children reminds me of when I was deciding which high school I wanted to go to. It is similar because it is a decision that will change how I go about my life, I have to make sure that I think about all the factors and consider all opinions. The same goes for Jacob, staying at Miss Peregrines home can and will change his life. He is leaving behind all his family and moving on in his life. When I was choosing which school I wanted to go to for high school, I thought about some the same things Jacob did. Friends influenced me, I wanted to stay with them, so did Jacob. He met Emma and didn't want to leave her because they had become very close. Family also crossed my mind when deciding, I wanted to go to Fx so I could stay with my brother, just like how Jacob wanted to stay with his family in America. In the end Jacob and I both made the right choice, I am going to Jp and Jacob is staying at Miss Peregrines home.

Page 91
Jacob is trying to get information about Grandpa Portman from his father but his father isn't really wanting to talk about it.
"I never dug to deep with your grandpa because I was afraid of what I'd find." Jacobs dad tells him. He tells Jacob about how one time he found a letter from another women and after hearing this Jacob feels shame for believing his Grandpa and his story's. That's why Jacobs dad didn't really have much respect for his father. Now Jacob feels confused because he wants to believe that his Grandpa is a good man but how can he after what he's discovered.

Page 121

"I'd seen them in the photographs". Jacob is in the old house and he finds a big, rusty, locked chest. His curiosity gets the better of him and so he tries to open it but can't get it. So he decides to drop it down the stairs and it's so heavy it falls right through the floor, into the basement. Jacob is nervous because the basement is dark and he hasn't been down there yet. When he gets down he finds out the trunk is full of pictures so he starts looking at them. And then he starts hearing the house creak and when he turns around he see's a dozen of the kids from the photos. He was so shocked all he could do was stare as one girl had fire coming out of her hands.
Page 127

"I unfolded myself from the cramped cairn tunnel and stepped outside only to be blinded by light.Shielding my eyes, I squinted through split fingers at a world I hardly recognized." Here is a bit of foreshadowing when Jacob says 'a world I hardly recognized' because it's true. Once he's through the tunnel he's in a totally different world. He doesn't quite yet realize that he's gone back in town but he is starting to notice something is different. For starters it's a nice, sunny day which is odd since it's usually cold and dreary. Then when he walks through town everybody stares at him like he's crazy and now Jacob is thinking what is going on?

Page 148

"My name is Headmistress Peregrine, or if you prefer since you are not currently under my care, Miss Peregrine. Pleased to finally meet you." This is the moment Jacob has been waiting for, to finally meet Miss Peregrine and get some answers. He now knows somehow he's landed in the past. Jacob meets with a girl, Emma whom he saw on the other side of the tunnel. She leads him back to the orphanage and in the yard he sees all the kids from the photos. Now he's certain his grandfather told him the truth. When he meets the Headmistress she is nothing but kind and trusting towards him. The other children are a little uncertain of him and don't believe him about who his grandfather is. So finally Miss Peregrine sits him down to have a talk about what's happening.

Page 206

"I'd still like to know how someone manages to get a sunburn on a day like this." This is what Jacobs dad says to him after he's spent a day in the past with the peculiar children. He is beginning to get  a little suspicious of Jacob. Like why he has a sunburn and where he spend his days.
"I lay there in the dark, still looking." Jacob is talking about Emma and he is realizing that he has feelings for her. Everything he does he thinks about Emma. But he also knows that it's wrong because she loves his grandfather and he's only a replacement.

I chose to draw a picture of the box of letters Jacob finds in Emma's room, because it symbolizes everything Jacob has been searching for, answers and they are in this box. This box was labeled as Emma's and Jacob knew it was supposed to be kept a secret, but he knew what could have been in that box. He found love letters and notes and pictures that explain all the reasons why. At first Emma is mad because Jacob disrespected her and went through her stuff without permission. But in the end she understands why and helps Jacob understand. This is also important because this box is the start of Jacob discovering his special ability.

They both play a big part in each others life and in the story.

The main character is Jacob but Grandpa Portman is another main character he is also Jacobs grandfather.

"the most fascinating person i knew." Pg.12  He is Outgoing.

"Knew everything about guns and self-defense and surviving in the wilderness, and spoke at least
three languages that weren't English."Pg.12 He is at multitasking.

"when i asked my dad why grandpa was so crazy about guns,he said it sometimes happens to people
who used to be soldiers or who had experienced traumatic things."Pg.29 He is a strong person.

Grandpa Portman is a lot of things but i would he is very Kind, caring and polite person.

"way he explained things was almost hypnotizing, and within two sessions he'd convinced me that the creature had been noting then product overheated imagination."Pg.43 belives in people.

"my grandfather had described it a hundred times, but in his stories that house was always a bright,
happy place."Pg.83 He is outgoing a lot like his grandpa.

Jacob is a strong person he likes to question a lot of things but when he is passionate about something he rarely gives up.

When I think of this story it reminds me of working at Co-op. I have to go there every Tuesday afternoon for work experience and it's kind of like how Jacob had to work at Smart-Aid. He was not happy about working there and that's exactly how I feel.  It's boring and I wouldn't  want to work there as my life career and neither does Jacob. His family  owns the company so he's forced to work there.

The people at Co-op are very unpleasant and annoying. There all older then me so they don't really take me seriously. And they always give me the worst jobs.

Another connection I can make to Jacob is his relationship with his grandfather. My twin sister and I are quite close just like them. Like if my sister died I would be like Jacob, looking for answers and closing myself off from everyone. I would go to a random island for her and go through a grungy old house.

on the sidewalk crying

In this picture there is not a lot to look for but there is one big thing you can see and that is a boy in a bunny costume sitting on the sidewalk beside his house all sad and crying. As soon as you see that you can tell that this boy is unhappy and that something is wrong. He is outside which means he was waiting for his dad to pick him up but his father forgot. So in other words he is mad, angry and disappointed. I choose this picture because I can relate to it because my friend had the same problem with her dad, he was never there for her which made me pick this drawing.

In the beginning of sections two when Jacob and his father were talking about his grandfather. Jacob remembered a picture with his dad in a bunny costume crying beside his house because he was waiting for his dad to take him trick or treating. Jacob’s dad told him that his grandfather was a bad parent and that most of the time while he was growing up he wasn't at home. He didn't know how to be a father his dad said.

1)"There was a girl who could fly, a boy who had bees living inside him, a brother and sister who could lift boulders over their heads." pg.14

-the quote represents the meaning of “Peculiar”.

Distinctive, Special, and Unique.

Which is what the book is all about. When I think about Peculiar-

-I think about something special

that is not in the normal. Which is what this book is conveying.

2)"Find the bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old man's grave. September 3, 1940."

The quote intends to tell us Jacob has to find what his grandfather said.

It leads us to wonder what is happening and what he meant.

This quote really engages a reader like me because

I want to know what Abe meant, which eventually leads readers

like me to keep reading.

3)“There was no moon and no movement in the underbrush but our own, and yet somehow I knew just when to raise my flashlight and just where to aim it, and for an instant in that narrow cut of light I saw a face that seemed to have been transplanted directly from the nightmares of my childhood. It stared back with eyes that swarm in dark liquid, furrowed trenches of carbon-black flesh loose on its hunched frame, its mouth hinged open grotesquely so that a mass of long eel-like tongues could wriggle out.” pg. 37

Hollodraw.jpgIt imprints the picture well into your minds.
And it also puts a kind of a nightmarish scene that can't

be forgotten easily.
This quote shows how this book has a lot of detail

even if it is not shown on picture.

4)"I ripped away the rest of the wrapping paper to find an old hardback book, dog-eared and missing its dust jacket. It was The Selected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson."

The Quote gives Jacob hope that all of

his hard work Didn't all go to waste.

 And to keep on

working to complete his promises

to his grandpa Portman.

This is important to the story because

it leads us to the next step of this story.

And to unravel the

book bit by bit.

5)”he shocked us all by not only signing us off on the idea but also encouraging my parents to let me go.” pg 66

This quote is important because it

kicks off the story of how Jacob might find his answers.

It also builds suspense on how we can foreshadow

what might happen in these next chapters of this book.

Quoter - Gina McMonagle

1. Page 106, Air heavy with brine and chimney smoke.

I decided to pick this quote because, it emphasizes that they are on an island in Britain. The imagery it puts in your mind, engages your senses to create a more in depth understanding of the setting. Knowing that the setting is on a tiny island is important because if it were in a place like America it would be connected to everyone, making it hard to keep a secret. When I picture chimney smoke I picture a dull area with a small community and that is what the book is trying to convey.

2. Page 102, A large bird was perched on the dresser, staring at me. It had a sleek feathered head and gray talons.

With a first look at this quote it seems unimportant, but if we remember that Jacob's grandfather mentioned the bird several times, and Jacob's father told him that it was a peregrine bird, we can start to make connections. This is important because when we make connections we begin to understand and get engaged in what we are reading. Soon after the bird flies away we know that Jacob is looking for Miss Peregrine, which is a big piece of symbolism, making it important to the story.

3. Page 105, It was almost too perfect of a morning.

With this quote we really have to pick it apart to find the true meaning. When Jacobs says it was almost to perfect of a morning, it is telling us something important is going to happen today and something odd which will also take place.

4. Page 106, The steps protested my weight with a symphony of shudders and creeks.

This is one of the most important piece of descriptive language in the whole book because, it creates a distinct image in our minds that puts us in Jacobs shoes and gives us a chance to feel as though we are actually tiptoeing through the house. I made sure that I included this because, it truly transports you to another place, which makes you want to keep reading.

5. Page 175, The sky was a photograph arrested flames licking a cloud bank.

This creates such a strong lasting image in our minds. It paints a picture stronger than our imagination, instead of the author saying the sky is red, which doesn't engage us in the book, it draws us in, which is why it's important part of the novel. This book is overflowed with figurative language, almost a little to much but, I chose this one because it truly describes the novel and generalizes the rollercoaster of emotion in one sentence.

This is a picture of a tentacle mouth monster. I drew this picture because Jacob has been having nightmares of this monster who he thinks killed his grandfather. He was so convinced that it would come back for him. This lead his to think that this monster was following him everywhere he went. He decided to never leave the house. In the book the cop introduced Jacob to a sketch artist he then explain how that monster looked so I tried to draw the tentacle monster. The way Jacob describe the monster looks like a man with tentacle in his mouth hence the name tentacle mouth. Do you think the tentacle mouth monster killed Jacobs grandfather? Or do you think its something else or someone else?

1.  "Because we weren't like other people. We are peculiar.”

The sentence made the mood intriguing. You want to know more about how they are different
from other people. Jacob was not sure if he can believe his grandfather.

 2. "But why did the monsters want to hurt you?”

The mood in this sentence is that you can tell that there is curiosity and
that Jacob is concern about his grandfather. Makes you worried. Makes
you interested in what will happened.

 3. "Dylan rolled his eyes but did as he was told.”

The author wants us to see that Dylan is annoyed and mad. His tired of
    being told what to do.

 4. "I fished the emergency money dad given me.”

The way the author used the word choice by saying ‘fished’
instead of ‘taken’ is that because he was sneaky about it or to
give the money and leave as fast as he can.

 5.  "I got in Dylan’s face and said “are you going to show me the

In the sentence when the author wrote “ I got in Dylan’s face” you can tell that he was mad,
      angry, and annoyed with Dylan.

Question Creator -Gina McMonagle

1.Why is Jacob so distant from the people who want to help him?

I would like to know why he is so against help, I understand that no one believes him but at this point he doesn’t believe himself either. He refuses to leave the house, but wants to travel to a far away island all by himself. If he talked to his family there might be someone who knows a little about what his grandfather was talking about. We see evidence of this on his birthday when his aunt gives him the book from his grandfather.

2.Is Jacob going to find anyone at the house on the island?

When Jacob arrives there appears to be no sign of footprints in the muddy soil, if it is an orphanage then there should probably be a lot of people making noise but it appears to be quiet and abandoned. If this is not the place Jacob is looking for then where will there plot go? Is he just going to go back home and be afraid forever?

3.If he does find someone living there will he stay?

Jacobs parents are very overprotective in the fact that letting him stay in a strange place with people they never met wouldn’t be an option. If it is where he wants to be how would he explain it to his parents? If he told his parents it’s a place for different kids they would not believe him, how would he go to school if he was living there would he leave for university? If Jacobs does stay these are questions that need to be answered.

4.Does Jacob want to be there?

From the book we learn that Jacobs is scared and tentative about going into the house, which brings up the question does he really want to be there, or is he just going so he can get closure on what happened to his grandpa. Aside from the fact that Jacob is haunted by his grandfathers death, he has an alright life back home, his family cares about him and they are wealthy. Why would anyone want to give up all that for a strange dirty abandoned place where he knows nothing and no one.

5.Will Jacobs father come look for him?

Jacob comes from an overprotective family, so if he stays at the home then his father will get worried about his where about. His parents wouldn’t just forget that they have a son, they would go looking for him and try to find him. Everyone says that if you go up there you probably won’t come back, knowing Jacob went up there would they assume that Jacob is dead?
